Oasis of Calmness amid the Bustle of the City, Kamppi Chapel is a place to see for those who visit Helsinki – the charming capital of Finland.
Different from other churches, this one is a place intended for appreciating peace and quiet: it cannot normally be reserved for private events. Although weddings, short prayers and christenings are sometimes organized there. Accordingly, Chapel has no Sunday service, but some concerts are occasionally arranged in its extraordinary interior.
The Kamppi Chapel was designed by architects belonging to the Helsinki-based practice, K2S Architects: Mikko Summanen, Niko Sirola and Kimmo Lintula. The chapel is made of three different types of wood. The external walls are made of spruce and are coated in a special type of wax with the use of nanotechnology. Internal walls are made of alder that was milled into shape, while fittings and internal door of the chapel are made of ash. The ceiling contains plasterboard, which has a sound proofing effect.
Except from the cross on the altar, which did silversmith Antti Nieminen, nothing else in the Chapel tells that it is of Christian nature. That is why it is hard to call the Kamppi Chapel as a place for Christian worship – its scope is much broader. It is the temple for everyone who seeks peace, serenity, meditation. Chapel’s atmosphere reminds of the silent cosmic space. Maybe, into the similar calmness would the astronauts delve when in flight? Earthly noise seems being distant. Human voices and urban sounds are hardly heard.
Almost absolute silence reigns here – such a rare occurrence in our everyday lives!
Rustle of the thoughts fades out, cloud by cloud. Its Majesty “Silentio” sets you into the sacred moment softly and gently. This silence now appears as the most pleasing symphony of the world!
The magic silence dissolves the bustle, anxiety, fear, and fatigue. The moment of being “tête-à-tête” with one’s own thoughts comes. The moment when you start hearing your own inner music…
The visit of the chapel is a sheer enjoyment after the walk in noisy city. Wooden surfaces enhance the relaxation, make it easy to breathe and create the natural scent inside the Chapel.
Silence provides “ecology for mind” while Wood – “ecology of environment”: they are the main components of this magic place….
…Temple of the Silence awaits you, for the music of your Soul to sound.
